Water Management System Update
The current water management system for Miromar Lakes is made up of (4) four drainage basins, 1, 2, 3 and 5/6, per the approved South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) Permit #36-03568-P.  Basin 4 is an undeveloped parcel south of the wetland slough that will have an independent water management system that may or may not be turned over to the CDD.  Drainage Basins 1, 2 and 3 make up the residential and golf course areas located on the west side of Ben Hill Griffin Parkway.  These three basins create a cascading system that drains to the south through the existing golf course lakes to Lake 3A, which is located on the north side of Porto Romano.    Drainage Basins 1 and 3 were designed to accept the stormwater runoff from portions of Ben Hill Griffin Parkway, which is added to the water from Miromar Lakes and discharged to I-75 through lake 3A. Lake 3A discharges to the swales along I-75.  The swales then follow the highway south to the north branch of the Estero River.  From there the water will flow through different residential communities before finally reaching the Estero Bay.

Drainage Basin 5/6 is the portion of Miromar Lakes that is located east of Ben Hill Griffin Parkway.  Basin 5/6 consists of the residential, golf course areas, and the two large recreational lakes.  The developed areas east of Ben Hill Griffin Parkway drain into the existing smaller lakes and dry detention areas.   Like Basins 1 and 3, Basin 5/6 accepts water from Ben Hill Griffin near the intersection of Alico Road and Ben Hill Griffin Parkway.  The stormwater runoff from the upland areas receive pretreatment in the lake and dry retention areas before discharging into the main recreational lakes through two pipes that cross under Miromar Lakes Parkway north of the main entrance. The recreational lakes discharge over a large concrete weir located in the southeast corner of the southern recreational lake.   The water then sheets flows through the adjacent wetlands to the southwest to the north branch of the Estero River at I-75.

Most of the northern recreational lake is owned and maintained by the Esplanade Lake Club Community Development District.  Esplanade is located within the permitted limits of Basin 5/6.  The water management system for Esplanade works the same as the Miromar Lake system where stormwater runoff discharges to internal lakes and dry detention basins before discharging to the large recreational lake.

The two recreational lakes were created when the property was a mine.  The two former mine lakes are connected at two locations.  These connections where required by a recorded lake use agreement that connects Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU), Miromar Lakes and Esplanade.  These lake connections allow for boats to travel back and forth between the two lake and allow water to reach the existing weir located in the southeast corner of the southern lake.

The Esplanade and Ben Hill Griffin are not the only properties that are outside of Miromar Lakes that drain into the Miromar Lakes water management system.  Portions of the north access road to FGCU and the two parcels to the south of the road, were designed to drain to the existing water management system through pipes that cross under the southern berm for Verona Lago.

Currently there are several parcels and drainage easements that make up the Miromar Lakes water management system that have not been turned over to the CDD.  These include parcels that are still under construction, parcels that are owned by the developer and parcels that were dedicated to one of several homeowners’ associations that make up the Miromar Lakes community.  The existing drainage easements, which connect the system together, will need to be transferred to the CDD to allow for continued access and maintenance of the components that make up the overall water management system for the  Miromar Lakes community.
